What is Reflexology?. Egypt

Principles, Origins and Aims.

Reflexology is a gentle, non-invasive, holistic therapy which is based on the principle that the body is represented in, and connected to, reflexes found in the feet. By using gentle thumb and finger pressure these reflexes are stimulated which can aid the body's natural healing processes, promote wellbeing and work to balance the entire system.

Reflexology has roots in the Ancient World, India, China and Egypt. The earliest known representation of Reflexology is from an Egyptian pictograph from the Ankh-ma-Hor's (The Physician) tomb dating back to around 2,500 BC

The tree of modern reflexology is approximately one hundred and fifty years old and has developed from Zone Therapy discovered by Dr William Fitzgerald, an ear, nose and throat specialist who found that pressure on points on specific parts of the body could result in pain relief in other parts of the body and could, in a large number of cases, remove the underlying cause of the condition.

In the 1930's Eunice Ingham, who had worked closely with a colleague of Dr Fitzgerald, Dr Shelby Riley, started developing her foot reflex theory. She had the opportunity to treat hundreds of patients where each reflex point of contact had been carefully and thoughtfully checked and rechecked until with all confidence she was able to determine that the reflexes on the feet were an exact mirror image of the organs of the body. Dr. Riley encouraged her to write her first book entitled "Stories The Feet Can Tell" where she documented her cases and carefully mapped out the reflexes on the feet as we know them today.

Who Can Benefit From Reflexology?

Most people can enjoy the benefits of Reflexology as treatments can bring an increased sense of wellbeing and may give relief from some existing health conditions.

Some caution needs to be taken in treating some conditions such as pregnancy and diabetes, also there be could be times when reflexology may be contra-indicated entirely or I might recommend another specialist in a particular field, but for the majority of clients a modified treatment plan can be formulated.

I practice ‘Light Touch’ Reflexology which works both feet simultaneously in order to promote balance and flow through the body. The treatment may feel gentle but can have deep and powerful effects and aid the body's natural healing ability and self-regulation (homeostasis)

Treatment is ‘holistic’ tailored to working with the unique and individual needs of each person. Reflexology can be an effective tool for help with stress management and helping to manage more chronic conditions. Regular treatment can help with a range of conditions including:-

Easing stress and anxiety
Revitalising energy.
Strengthening the Immune System
Reducing symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Pain Management
Helping with symptoms of the menopause and PMT
Promoting healthy sleeping patterns and reducing insomnia
Assisting with the management of side-effects for people undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses.
